A Chick-Fil-A just opened up by my school and I had it for the first time a few weeks ago. I wasn’t all that impressed by the food, but there was quite a line in order to get it, so there must be something to it. So much so, a promising football star based his college selection on having one of the restaurants near by.
Exactly one month after demolishing Virginia 43-24 in the Chick-Fil-A bowl, the Auburn Tigers signed Cassanova McKinzy, a 6’2″ 225 pound outside linebacker from Birmingham who had scholarship offers from most schools in the SEC.
By signing day yesterday, McKinzy had narrowed down his choice to two schools— rivals Auburn and Clemson— before announcing that he would be staying in-state and attending Auburn.
But it wasn’t Auburns history of winning or coaching staff that ultimately influenced the linebackers decision.
“They had no Chick-Fil-A on campus,” McKinzy remarked about Clemson. “You had to go 15 minutes off-campus to go to a real restaurant.”
Oddly enough, there actually is a Chick-Fil-A location on the Clemson campus, according to the restaurant’s website.
It might seem comical that he’s based what could be one of the most important decisions of his athletic and academic life on the location of a fast food restaurant, but sometimes it’s the little things that matter most.
