While most college students are struggling just to pay rent on their crappy apartments with their minimum wage jobs, one extremely lucky college student will be living it up in the lap of luxury.
The most expensive apartment in New York City was purchased in the name of 22-year-old Ekatarina Rybolovleva, daughter of Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian now based in Monaco who made a fortune in potash fertilizer.
The apartment sold for $88 million, 66% above that the previous record sale.
Rybolovleva’s father reportedly bought the apartment for his daughter as a gift to use while studying at an undisclosed U.S. university. The apartment boasts ten rooms and a wraparound terrace, a giant step up from the places most of her undisclosed classmates live in.
The apartment previously belonged to Sanford I. Weill, the former head of Citigroup Inc. Weill has said he planned to donate the proceeds of the sale to charity, likely to one of a number of groups he already supports.
The previous record residential sale in Manhattan was the 2006 purchase of a townhouse on East 75th Street by J. Christopher Flowers, a private-equity investor. The largest condo deal was the $51.5 million purchase of a series of apartments at the Plaza Hotel by developer Harry Macklowe in 2007.
