San Diego Chargers v New York Giants

Overanalyzing Eli

February 8, 2012 · Posted By: Nick Van Leuven

Eli Manning won his second Super Bowl this past Sunday and the overdone amount of talk and analysis has almost reached Tebow level. The ELIte talk is really getting out of hand.

All this talk is pointless as Eli’s career is still young and may have some of his best years before him. Yes, he has won two super bowls (twice as much as big brother), but hey, Trent Dilfer, won a Super Bowl remember? Sometimes things just happen.

Sports media is far too bipolar when it comes to the here and now. Make a great play or win any big game and a player is immediately revered to the highest just as one bad season and a player is quickly written off.

Lebron and the Heat lose in the NBA Finals and he “can’t finish and the season was a failure.” Never mind a whole new team reaching the Finals in the first year. Tebow has a good game and is on a winning streak, “his new style may change the NFL.” Next week he plays bad and the Broncos lose and he is quickly labeled the worse starting quarterback to play the game.

Sports are filled with far too many examples of this nature. Only when a career is complete and everything is taken into account can a true decision about a player be made and all other analysis is a premature waste of time. Deep down I think every sports fan knows this but we soak it in and discuss it after every big game regardless because we’re fans and we can’t live without. We love to hate it.
