After numerous delays, UCLA’s South Campus Court of Sciences Student Center will be open for business tomorrow.
The Court of Sciences Student Center will join five other buildings at UCLA that are LEED- certified green facilities. These include the renovated Luskin School of Public Affairs, La Kretz Hall, the new campus police station and two student apartments.
As many as nine total UCLA projects, including the South Campus Court of Sciences Student Center, are expected to go under review later this year.
In January, the UC Board of Regents released its 2011 University of California Annual Report on Sustainable Practices. The report stated that the UC system saved $32 million last year in energy costs – $11 million more than they saved in the 2009-2010 school year.
As of 2011, the UC system has a total of 87 LEED-certified green facilities, including the five at UCLA.
The center has been under construction for two years after the demolition of South Campus’ Bombshelter in December 2009.
After numerous delays, preparation for the opening began several weeks ago. Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) officials trained staff and ran a series of tests, Cindy Bolton, director of Associated Students UCLA Food Service, told the Daily Bruin.
They also simulated mock rush-hour situations to prepare for the influx of students expected once the facility opens, she said.
The Student Center will feature a Subway and Yoshinoya, as well as two custom UCLA restaurants– Fusion and Bombshelter Bistro.
The building will be open for business tomorrow, but a small ceremony to honor the opening is being tentatively planned for spring quarter.
