A 19-year-old Northwest College student accused of eating a single doughnut at a grocery store without paying for it will end up paying a lot more than the doughnut is worth.
The Northwest Trail reports that Zach O’Dell has agreed to pay a $200 fine and a $10 court cost, as well as 79 cents to cover the cost of the doughnut.
O’Dell, a midfielder on the college’s soccer team, was accused of snacking on the sweet in Blair’s Market in Powell, Wyoming in November while in the store with friends. O’Dell and his friends paid for other items at the register, but left without paying for the doughnut.
He was charged with shoplifting, a misdemeanor. Sources told the Trail that O’Dell attempted to pay for the doughnut after being contacted by store personnel and claimed it was an oversight in forgetting to pay.
Attorney Sandra Kitchen says she has deferred the prosecution, and the charge will be dismissed in six months if O’Dell stays out of trouble.
The Trail reports that O’Dell declined to comment.
Funnily enough, the Northwest College student has been studying criminal justice.
